Propeller doesn't spin fast enough

Post by brampower » 22 Jul 2011, 15:14

Hey guys,

Today I received my AR.Drone. Got to give it a little spin, then the battery died and I stopped for dinner. So, when I came back my battery was fully charged, I want to take off and.. the thing just flips over. No crash, no firmware change, nothing. The only thing that's changed is the recharged battery (which obviously can't be the problem).

Do you guys think I already need to get a motor replacement because of this, or could it be something else? I don't see any loose connection. When I hold the AR.Drone in my hand and tell him to take off I can clearly feel less wind under the right front propeller.

My problem is exactly as in this video (but my drone goes to the front-right):

Thanks in advance guys.. sucks that this has to happen after only one 10 minute run :(

Is this drone "new" or used?

Then don't repair anything. Try to return the drone (warranty case)...

Hello,

I live in the Netherlands, so it would be very expensive to send it in :/

Propeller doesn't spin fast enough

Ok...
You have now following steps to check and options:
-can you spin all propellers easily by hand?
-gears are good in shape, nothing broken?
-propellers are not damaged or in a "wrong degree" due to the packaging?
-try to change the right motor with another motor and check if the error appears now on the other side (if yes, it's with a high probability the motor).

Yes, they all spin good with hand. The propeller also spins when I try to take off, but it just doesn't seem to be spinning fast enough. Gears and propellers look fine, can't see anything wrong with them.
I ordered a new motor and the tools to change all the parts, so I'll first try to swap the motors around when I receive my tools (probably Tuesday). If it's the motor, I will just replace the motor with the new one..

What if it isn't though? Would I have to replace the motherboard?

Did you check the prop shaft for gunk? Sometimes fine hair or such can wrap around the shaft and slow rotation. You can easily remove the prop and pull the shaft out without special tools. Just don't let the circlip spring away when you nudge it off with the flat blade of a screwdriver.

Could be also the navboard. But try first to change the motor...

Hey guys,

I tried switching 2 motors around, and it still flips to the same side.
I managed to have it take off 1 time, and it kept spinning around until it finally hit something. I think I'll just go for a new navboard.. :/

I am having the same problem as you described. What fixed it in the end? Was it the Nav board? Read some things about reseting the trim as well but want to know where to start to try fix mine as it flips as soon as it takes off. Mine is not new and had it for a while but just started doing this after a small crash :)

I ended up replacing pretty much every part of my drone... I replaced the motor, the propeller, the navboard and the motherboard and in the end it worked again.

Unfortunately, I don't know which part exactly fixed it :(

I have experienced similar problems. Finally I found tiny crack in the cross. Have a look at PC diagnostics software at http://www.msh-tools.com/ardrone. You can run motors at the same speed and see what happens, or perform take off/landing and compare your data with the enclosed stream of operational ardrone.

Seems like it could be anything them, because the cross was one of the few things I didn't replace.. :/

Brampower, I also live in the Netherlands. Having al kind of spares and an extra Drone for spares to...
You find out the hard way you need them some day.
If you want to try out any of the more expansive parts, let me know.
Buying stuff to figure out you didn't need them afterall is not the most funny part of flying a Drone :/
