New Build - TBS Discovery :)

Post by DaZa » 12 Jul 2013, 08:43

Well time to unveil the new bird. Some of you have already seen it but here it is for all to see.

Team Black Sheep Discovery FPV QuadCopter

TBS Discovery Frame
BirdDog 900kv 2212-13 Motors
BirdDog 30A SimonK Flashed Opto ESC's
BirdDog 10x5 CF Props
Naza-M+GPS V1
Orange R620 Receiver
Orange Satellite Receiver
Turnigy Nanotech 3S 4000mah 45-90C Lipo Batteries
Pitch only servo gimbal mounted up front on isolation plate
Lipo Alarm
GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition camera
12v & 5v UBEC for power

This is an entirely new bird. I've used the Naza-M and RX from the RaptorCopter for now but will get a new Naza-M V2 for this frame and put it back in and have the F450 RaptorCopter back in the air shortly.

Had some minor issues with the ESC bullet connectors breaking off the ESC PCB but some hot glue has fixed that now. Flies really well, lots of grunt and turns on dime and is nice and stable.

I've got a new Futaba 8J radio coming for it as well as a set of FatShark Dominator FPV goggles, an ImmersionRC 600mw VTX and a 420line quality FPV camera and necessary cables for it and the GoPro and a video switcher that will cycle through the FPV and GoPro camera. I'll prob add a 3rd camera facing down or backwards for better orientation via FPV. These goodies should arrive Monday or Tuesday then it's really fun time.

For those who aren't familiar with the TBS Discovery frame it has all it's wiring integrated into the frame including receiver and power as well as an integrated OSD module and power regulator and connectors on the bottom plate to wire all the FPV gear in neat. It's also made with room up front for a GoPro and a FPV camera and has a vertical CF mount to screw the FPV camera to directly. For FPV flying these are one of the best frames you can get with it all built in for neatness and eliminates interference and noise in your video feeds.

The TBS Discovery quad is definitely a sweet machine and you have a great foundation for your FPV build. Nice looking quad DaZa...

Beautiful... how come you went with the two ubecs rather than the TBS Core? Doesn't it come built in?

Do you use the orange satelite? I have a spektrum satelite I never installed.

how much $ does it take to end up with all that? Looks awesome, and I'm uber jealous. Nice work!

Core is optional but I have installed one but it does 12v or 5v not both at the same time.

Besides I want to keep video feeds separate from accessories for noise filtering purposes. LED's and other bits go on the UBEC's and the FPV system will connect to the core.

The cleaner the power system is the better the FPV range and reception and quality of video I get.

Yep I purchased a separate sat RX for the Orange R620 and it's plugged in up the front but as soon as my Futaba 8J 8ch TX/RX rocks up on Monday or Tuesday it's going in on this frame.

Thanks dude! This is not a budget quad unfortunately, I spec'd it for reliability and performance for FPV flying whereas you could build something similar for half the price.

I can always upgrade later Code ;)

Waiting till they sort the bugs out of the gimbal and its flight proven.

Just put 4 packs thru it this morning, its flying real good now, little vibration but I'll dial that out with some balancing.

High winds and rain today, managed to get 1 pack in late this afternoon but the wind was picking up so decided it wasn't worth risking a crash with gusts up to 60km/h!

Some pics I took of the Disco out on the oval. Video was so crap from the wind wasn't worth uploading.

As you can see I've added some CF leg extensions to give it some more height under the belly. Also added some headlights for some nightime FPV flying :)

FPV gear and new Futaba 8J radio should all arrive tomorrow so happy days for me!

Video from my flight yesterday. Excuse the vibration, still dialing in and tuning the gimbal and mounts etc.
