How to downgrade from 2.1.20 to 2.1.16

Post by paul_borromeo » 30 Jun 2012, 05:23

Hi everyone.

This is my first post in the forum.

I excitedly updated my firmware on the AR Drone 2.0 to 2.1.20 and found the following issues:

- unresponsive flying
- unstable hover
- rotates after take off (especially after hard reset)
- drifting to left or right either in outdoor or indoor hull

I did not experience this from the previous firmware and after searching the forum, I have found that most would recommend to stick to 2.1.16

Ive read that downgrading is possible but could not find the instructions.

I have downloaded and paid for the drone control app hoping that it could downgrade the firmware but from the looks of it, it can only downgrade the 1.++ firmware.

I hope the community can help.

Thanks everyone!

Here's the 2.1.16... it says 2.0.16 on the download but it's a typo ... you'll see the 2.1.16 when you extract...

I'm sorry if I come back with very specific questions but i am not well versed on ftp and telnet.

when I press command K on the desktop i get the mac ftp client.

i then receive a prompt to log in. i log in as guest and get this window

that lists boxes, a zip file called "police-notice.html.gz", usb and usb1

may I ask what i am missing in the steps as I cannot get into the detail that was generously posted by solaris

thank you

Here's an excellent video on downgrading the firmware (on a Mac); it's how I got mine back to 2.1.16

You're not on the right port... you should be on server 192.168.1.1 port 5551
Sounds like it went to it's own default 21 or whatever

(Thanks to user "Alvess" for coming up with this guide)

From PC (i used windows)

1.Connect to the drones network with the PC wifi

2.Telnet to the drone . address: 192.168.1.1

3.to create version.txt and update.txt Write the following in the telnet session:

cat > /firmware/version.txt [enter]
2.1.12 [enter] [Ctrl-D]
cat > /update/version.txt [enter]
2.1.16 [enter] [Ctrl-D]

[enter] means press the "enter" key [Ctrl-D] means press the "Ctrl and the D" key

explanation: /firmware/version.txt must be "lower" than the /update/version.txt ... /update/version.txt must have same number as the update.plf file.

4. Check that you got it right.

cat /firmware/version.txt [enter]

should say: 2.1.12

cat /update/version.txt [enter]

should say: 2.1.16

5. Upload the unzipped (i used 7-zip) ardrone2_update.plf with ftp (I used cyberduck) adress: 192.168.1.1 port: 5551

6. Disconnect the batteries for a couple of seconds.

7. Connect the batteries again and the update starts. Don't disconnect until the leds are green again, takes 2-3 minutes.

thanks for the guide, I just rolled back to 2.1.16 from 2.1.20 due to control issues.
ps, I think it should be this;

cat > /firmware/update.txt [enter]
2.1.16 [enter] [Ctrl-D]

strange, I couldn't get that to work, had to do it the other way :?

Interstingly after downgrading, the drone went nuts on takeoff. It would hover perfectly for a few seconds, then start spinning like it was doing a calibration, but also flying to one side. As I tried to correct it, it would just crash. After a couple of goes, I decided just to let it spin. It did a couple of turns by itself, now it's completely stable and holds position very well.
