Tablet recommendations for Skycontroller

Post by carl1954 » 15 Oct 2016, 00:46

Hello,
I recently picked up the Parrot Bebop 2 and Skycontroller Bundle,
and I was wondering if anyone could make recommendations on a reliable
tablet that will work well for FPV flying.
I've been using desktop and laptop PC's for years, and until now have
never needed a tablet.
My initial thoughts were to go with an Android OS, but I's like to hear
what other people have had success with.

Thanks,
--Carl

Hello and welcome to the board,

personally I like the iPad Mini most. Great size, great performance.

Hi Tommy, thanks for the welcome, and for the reply.
I'll take a look at the iPad Mini.
I'm also looking at the Asus memo Pad 7 LTE, which got a great rating from Consumer Reports, but they aren't testing it with a Skycontroller.
Aside from wondering which tablets work well with the Skycontroller, it might also be useful to know which tablets had problems, in areas like interfacing or visibility.

Again, thanks,

Highly recommend the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 for FPV. I chose it primarily for the OLED display. It has been reviewed as the brightest and sharpest display of any tablet and it is usable in bright sunshine if you just avoid having the sun strike the screen directly. But not using Skycontroller - just a PS3 gamepad connected to the tablet running AR.pro 3 app.

Hi BayouBill, thanks for the tip.
The bright display sounds like a big plus. Would the Galaxy fit in the Skycontroller?

Yes, the SC specs show it will accept a 4:3 tablet up to 10.7" The Galaxy S2 tab comes in 8" and 10.7" sizes.

Good morning! I've been searching for information regarding compatible tablets/phones to use with the Skycontroller/Bebop system for my wife to use. I have the Mavic, she flies the Bebop. After the suggested update to the Skycontroller, none of our usual devices will connect to the Skycontroller. Her LG did work with the SC, and still works if directly connected to the BP, but you cannot use with the SC+BP. It appears to me that the SC update does not (in my case anyway) allow the SC to move from the 5GHZ wifi band to the 2.4GHZ band, and therefore any phone or tablet not 5GHZ capable will not "find" the SC. My MOTO X and most newer iPhones 6 and up do dual wifi and can use the latest BP software: NO PROBLEM when using the Moto. My suggestion is this: if looking for a tablet to use with both, look for one capable of dual wifi and at least Android Lollipop or greater.

The iPad Mini is PERFECT!!! It is more portable than an iPad Air or iPad. It has a bigger screen than an iPhone, and is the perfect size if you ever want to try your drone without the skycontroller. It's also great for range without a skycontroller! :D :D :D

Just kidding! I use my Mac! :)

Keep looking up!

I'm using the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7" Works great with the sky controller. The screen is sharp and bright. I have no issues linking up with the drone and controller. And if you're only looking to use the tablet for the drone only. Then this will be much cheaper the the Ipad mini. I bought mine brand new off E-bay for a touch under 90.00 usd shipped.

Did you have to do anything in particular to get your A 7 to work with the SC? Like they were saying it picks up the BB Wi-Fi network but not the SC, which of course is on a 5Ghz. Any insight on that would be awesome I just bought it today because I saw this feed. Plus is says in the SC compatibility page, "works with iPad - iOS blah blah or higher, and Android tablets (no fire tabs)".
