Control your AR.Drone with any MFI-Controller gamepad

Post by AR.Tommy » 21 Mar 2014, 09:31

Drone Control version 2.7 will allow you to use any* MFI-Controller gamepad to control your AR.Drone. It will require iOS 7 and of course an AR.Drone. :D

At the moment I'm using the Moga Ace Power Gamepad, which is nice because it has a battery pack inside and is able to charge your iPhone while flying the AR.Drone.

I did a short preview video yesterday but it was pretty windy:

*: at the moment "any" means any controller with an extended layout (2 analog joysticks)

When will it be available in Canada? Is there a way for me to get the US App now? I have the Stratus Steel Series controller and would love to get this working with my Parrot.

Will your other (None US version) apps be getting an update as well Tommy, I don't have a MFI Controller but I saw you tweaked some other stuff too?

MFI Gamepad Compatibility List

Post by AR.Tommy » 11 Jun 2014, 08:45

Basically the app will work with any MFI gamepad with 2 analog sticks, here are the ones I tried already:
mfi_moga_game_pad.JPG
The Moga Ace Power Controller Gamepad. It plus into the Apple connector and is only available for iPhone 5 or higher. It will not work with an iPad. It has a battery that allows you to charge the iPhone while using it, which is pretty neat. The analog sticks are more like analog "buttons" not too precise in the beginning.
mfi_stratus_steel_series.jpg
The Stratus Steel Series Controller Gamepad. Wow this thing is tiny - it connects via bluetooth and will work with iPads also. In my opinion the analog sticks are way better than the button like pads of the Moga Ace Power.

I am sold on the Stratus Steel Series Controller, saw them on Redmondpie and instantly thought...Drone Control COOL

EDIT: Urgh...doesn't work with iPad 3, not sure it's worth it just for my iPhone 5s...

I have used the stratus with my drone the last two days. It works great. Sometimes the app doesn't recognize that my iPhone 5s is connected to the controller. Shutting the app down one or twice usually resolves this.

Flying is much better now. Thanks for updating your app!

Thank you for your feedback Savagewatts. Which one of the Stratus are you using? The same as in my picture or the XL version?

I can't seem to get the MOGA controller to work. I have enabled the MFi option, but doesn't do anything. Still can only control with the screen.

Any tips?

I am using the one in your picture. I find this connects better if it's on and paired with your phone before you pair the drone.

Unfortunately I let my nephew try it and he flew it at top speed into a house. It looks like I only need a new Nav board as I keep get the pic dogwatch warning.

Thanks for this A.R. Tommy. You are the man.

Hello,

does the LED on the moga flash when plugging in the iPhone?

Finally my main board arrived and I'm in the air again. Tommy, I seem to have trouble getting my controller to connect to your app now for whatever reason.

It is connected to my iPhone but Drone Control doesn't recognize it. I did a firmware update but still no changes.
