AR Drone 1 - External Antenna Mod

Post by garrock » 24 Jul 2013, 01:51

I put an AR Drone 1 Main Board under the Stereo Microscope to investigate making an External Antenna Mod:

The following has not been 100% confirmed:
  • It "appears" there is a tiny RF Switch chip (not a splitter) that feeds the two antenna's on the board.

If the above is the actual case, then the AR Drone 1 actively switches back and forth between its two antennas.
The picture has two red arrows showing what I think are two control lines that switch the RF feed to one of the two antennas.
The orange arrow is the common RF feed point.

---------------------

An External Antenna Mod could be one of the following:
  • * Two External Antenna's. Cut into the two RF feed traces coming out of the tiny RF Switch chip
    * One External Antenna. Cut into the single RF feed trace going in to the tiny RF Switch chip (shown with an orange arrow). The tiny RF switch chip must be removed.

A person said they will send me their AR Drone 1 in the beginning of August.
I will add two external antennas.
If it does not work out then it can be restored back to normal stock antenna operation.

I have a 1.0. as well now Garrock. I'd be interested in this. Hopefully I won't mess up the board in this one if I try it.

ditto ... say the word and I'll make sure you have a V1 drone to hack up. Your post brought back some memories for me having looked into this some time back. Thanks for the pointer. I completely forgot about the two traces on the V1 mainboard.
