Water crash - motherboard replacement? Please help!

Post by speedseeker » 02 Oct 2010, 14:51

Dear all

after an iphone app malfunction, my AR Drone fell into a lake and doesn't work anymore.

Status:
- 4 red LED burn for 20-30 sec then turn off
- no lights on the bottom of the drone
- no WiFi connection

Measures:
- loaded battery
- pressed reset and unpair button
--> no reaction.

Question:
- how can I be sure that I need to replace the mother bord?
- can I fix the problem without replacing the mother bord?
- is this covered by the Parrot guarantee?

Thank you

- how can I be sure that I need to replace the mother bord? - It got wet, electronics and water just don't mix.
- can I fix the problem without replacing the mother bord? - It's unlikely you'll be able to recover from water damage. You would need distilled pure water to flush the board and then a moderate heat to disperse of the moisture. Not 100% effective but works for mobile phones.
- is this covered by the Parrot guarantee? - Water damage is not covered.

call tech support. arrange for non warranty repairs. because it's at least the motherboard. could be the nav board, speed controllers and god knows what else. at least that way they'll have all the parts available to do the repairs needed. instead of order a motherboard, then parts if / when that doesn't work.

Water crash - motherboard replacement - sudden resurrection!

Post by speedseeker » 04 Oct 2010, 19:14

I call tech support for a quote - sending in the drone costs 60 EUR.

Before wrapping up my drone to send it to France, I checked the drone once more.
Suddenly: WiFi works, 4 green light - the drone was back to life after three days!!!

You wouldn't believe how happy I was!
However, I will stay away from water as far as I can.

Shoot that's cool. I just dunked mine this morning.
Going to put it in my oil burner room and will leave it for the day. Hopefully I'll get lucky.

I know sometimes in these forums it can get to be a bitch session, but I am consistently surprised at how resilient this drone thing is.

1 hour in the oil burner room did the trick. All green, just flew it. Amazing.

I did manage to melt a prop by having it up against a pipe... oops, but it still flies fine. It's got a bump of plastic at the tip, but I guess the weight remains unchanged. ;-)

Happy drone pilot here.

Well I just did it today. took me a few minutes to find then get out i had to go run to my house and grab the pool scooper then whent ankle deep in what may be aligator infested water but it was worth it to grab a 300 dollar toy that i just bought haha. Anyways i got home went straight to the blow drier did that for like 30 or so minutes and let it air drie is there anything else that i should do. I see most of you have had luck with yours, So far I've been very lucky with mine considering every time in used the emergency cut out button it landed right side up in grass I'm hoping this will be lucky for me too. So yeah i was thinking about placing it in my oven but that goes to a minimum of 170 deg F, so IDK if it will withstand that or not.

I've seen stuff as sensitive as an iphone itself come back to life by following the below procedure:

remove the battery (for obvious reasons)
soak and agitate it in a pool of distilled water
place it in an airtight bag filled with dry rice

wait a day

voila!
