Wifi Repeater to boost the range

Postby rcpilot » 01 Jun 2012, 07:28

if you want to be able to fly much higher and further without drop outs while flying

setup a wifi repeater to boost the signals.

I setup an old Linksys WRT54G wifi router as a wifi repeater and tried it out today.

I was flying at 40 meteres with no dropouts and still had full wifi strength in freeflight.

going to try higher tomorrow.

I am amazed Parrot dont sell a wifi repeater (booster)

and no mods done to the drone either.

Even when flying lower to the ground the repeater makes the connection rock solid.

Nice vid man, the routers I have laying around won't take the firmware update your talking about. I'd tried a while back. I'm lucky to live on 4 acres with not much interference around so can get 40 - 50 meters anyway. I've kept my alt limiter at 30m at the moment with my 2.0, I'll try higher when sooner or later.

Out of curiosity, what would you pay for a modded G-router?

I would be willing to sell my router but I would need to get another first.

I will check the which other routers/repeaters can be used.

The sr10000. Has given me 380 feet vertical so far and about 670 feet away from me and i still had a strong signal. The repeater is 5 feet away from me..

What software version are you using on the linksys? I'm assuming it DD-WRT or is it stock linksys.
Thanks as I have a number of these old units around.

So is the sr10000 the same power as a linksys?

Yes I have installed the DD-WRT firmware on my Linksys WRT54G V2.2

I have increased the power to 200mW in the software.

I use my old D-Link DGL-4300 for range extension. It's not a repeater, just an old router. Works fine, but it limits me to flying near a power outlet.

Do you guys know an inexpensive and reliable way to power the router out in the field? For half an hour or so. The power input is 5V 2.5A on it.
